Ringwood We normally meet at 7.30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of every month at Ringwood Meeting House, 22 Meeting House Lane, Ringwood, BH24 1BY. Visitors and new members welcome. (February) Humour in Genealogy Chris Broom Chris got interested in genealogy when his father, who was adopted, wanted to find his birth family. His talk was a romp through miscellaneous extracts found in his research. They were found on parish registers, one poor child was named “Caller her what you like”. Some people had fun with the census and there was Peter Tabby- servant-mouser. Even memorial inscriptions didn`t escape one for Lettuce Manning buried 14th July 1737 in Moulton Suffolk read Oh cruel death to please thy palate, cut down lettuce to make a salad. A light hearted and amusing evening. (March) Prison and Criminal Records – Gill Blanchard Gill started by giving us an overview of the vast number of record available from the 9th century, when justice was administered locally, through to 1971when the system was overhauled and the courts became Crown and Magistrates. There were different types of courts Manor Courts, Church Courts (Ecclesiastical), Military Courts, Assizes, Quarter and Petty Sessions. Country Record Offices have Quarter and Petty Sessions, local prison records, estate, family and private collections. The National Archives has Assize records, some prison registers, debtors and bankrupts, Metropolitan Polce records from 1829, Chancery Records. This is not a subject we have had before and Gill covered it very well. It was a very interesting and informative evening. (April) My ancestor was on the 1921 census, they should have been – John Hanson To begin with John has two mantras; Never assume anything and learn about the record before you use it. Very good advice for all family history historians John`s talk was very informative and covered, how to find out more, scanning and transcription, what is different about the 1921 census, useful information and searching the records. We had so much useful information to take in but fortunately John very kindly had very good handouts. Contact: Alison Davis or 07806 985671 Email: ringwood@hgs-online.org.uk
