Reports by Carol Gomm (April) Rosario, The Story of a House & its Family – Katherine Rusbridge

This talk came out of a u3a house project with Katherine deciding to research her dental surgery in Fleet. Luckily its original name can be seen in the stained glass above the front door and this was the clue she needed to uncover its past. Built for Lambeth ironmonger Samuel Frewer, he was here in the 1901 census but as the house was under construction at the time it seems he was living in a ‘shed’ on site with his wife at the weekends to oversee progress. With lavish stained-glass windows and ornamental features over the doors inside and out, no expense was spared and it remained in the family until the death of his youngest daughter in 1974 aged 96. The name came from Samuel’s time in the navy aboard HMS Rosario but new owners nearly removed the sign. Had they done so she would not have uncovered the story. She was also able to speak to a great nephew and a 1980s occupant. They answered some of her questions, leaving the only mystery as how the son of a bankrupt
