(September) 21st Members’ evening Our September meeting was held in Ringwood Meeting House. Alison our group leader was on holiday so Paul, our chairman, kindly stood in for her. We discussed what we had found during lockdown, what we found in the 1921 census. Paul talked about the HGS move to the This talk is all about the amount of information that can be found out from the back of a postcard. At the turn of the century the post was collected 6/7times a day, so a post card could be sent in the morning and an answer received in the afternoon. Helen`s research had started with a postcard her father bought at a car boot sale because it had an American stamp on it. The postcard was sent to Private Gilbert Freeman from his brother in the USA. Gilbert was killed on the Somme and has no known grave but is recorded on Thiepval Memorial as well as three war memorials. Helen explained about all the different resources she used to build a picture of Gilbert and his family. It was very surprising the amount of information that can be found from the back of a postcard with the help of the census and the internet. I`m sure most of us have family postcards and will now be reading the backs as well. A very enjoyable talk.. Forthcoming meetings in the Meeting House unless stated otherwise: Contact: Alison Davis or 07806 985671 Email: ringwood@hgs-online.org.uk Record Office and where the HGS is going.
