Military Service in the Navy, he received the Falklands medal and an MBE. Fi – Shared two lots of medals – her father’s and son’s Military Medals.
Jan – told us about Edward Nolan Moon, her father’s cousin, an aviator, who received the medal, Distinguished Service Order. He received the Gallantry Medal for saving lives, and the Royal Humane Medal. Steph – talked about her grandfather, he had an accidental career as a torpedo operator in the navy. No active service in WWI but received the British War Medal for his service in Russia, Siberia, and on HMS Dragon. He collected postcards from the Baltic, numerous ports of call, and dead Bolshevik’s. He went on to have a naval career on the Q ships. Marilyn – shared her Father’s Medals, an engineer. Apparently, every time he left a ship something happened to it. He had a safe career. Marilyn herself a received a swimming medal. Richard – During a Firing of a Salute for Prince Albert and French visitor, Louis Phillipe, a cannon exploded. It killed two men operators. Louis Phillipe, the French Visitor, made enquiries after the event and a warded their wives and mother’s pensions. Brian - showed the Lapel badge of a Caterpillar, The Caterpillar Club. This could be worn if you had parachuted out of an airplane, Brian’s Father-in-Law won his. The caterpillar refers to the silk threads crated by Silkworms. Elayne – Shared her Great Grandad’s war medals from serving in the Postal Corps and, her grandfather’s from serving in the Navy during WWII. Mark – shared his own Medal, the LS&GC Medal. He missed out on NI Medal, Falkland Medal, because of medal dating. He also helped to make Cambodia safe for UN electoral teams. Served on the Mekong River, going into villages to speak to elders with Guns and tea, scorpions etc. He caught malaria and was saved by German medics who administered Quinine. Mark also served in the 2nd Gulf War. Jan – shared her Great Grandfather’s Grandfathers WWI, Father’s WWII, Grandfathers WWII, Husband’s Falklands War Medal. Together with her cousin all the medals are now cleaned and mounted, known as PIP, SQUEAK and WILFRED. Jan also shared the Coronation medal, and the Elizabeth Cross (Awarded to relatives of those who died in Falklands War). An interesting evening, finishing with a seasonal drink and goodies.
