Helen’s Zoom talk was not about the history of postcards but the stories behind them and Helen began with the first postcard her father bought 20 years ago at a car boot sale. His interest was in the stamp as it was posted in the USA but hers was in the recipient, a Pte Gilbert Freeman at the Chelsea Barracks a couple of years before WW1. In the same way that we construct a family tree she followed the family of Gilbert and a fascinating story emerged to provide a snapshot of their lives. The next postcard concerned the Whitford family of silversmiths, one of whom had a connection to Great Ormond Street Hospital. Leading on from that were two postcards sent to children in hospital, with Helen directing us to www.h.harp.org to find details of hospitalized children. Finally, a postcard sent to Mrs Jones
