(June) Six of the Family of Lazarus – Lorraine Whale This was a change from the previously advertised talk. Although concerned mainly with workhouses at Chertsey and Guildford the methods of research and sources used a would apply to us all. Lorraine found a newspaper article of 1887, referring to the Bushell family who were made homeless due to the husband not paying the rent, in addition to mistreating his wife. Mary and five children were taken to Chertsey Workhouse whose records list the family and the state they were in when admitted. As with many workhouses as a cost saving measure they were moved to Guildford as the parish they had more association with. Lorraine tried to put the family together and find out what happened to Mary and the children. The older children were found using census and BMD records and some had moved onto work, one joining the army and raising his own family. Mary was found on BMD dying at 43. The three youngest girls were not found on later census records but found as ‘Home Children’ who were sent to Canada on passenger lists and the records of Home Children. They were split with the older girl going to one family and the two younger girls to another family.
