Harold Bamford
Bert Shelley
Royal Irish Regiment – a British regiment, its prefix notwithstanding – headquartered in Clonmel, County Tipperary. He would soon transfer to the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry, whose 1st Battalion was based in that county, as part of the Army’s 6th Division that had been left behind to guard against rebellion. It would be another year, though, before a newly-promoted Second Lieutenant Bamford was at the Front, wearing his recently- purchased uniform, the receipt for which was sent to us by Bamford’s great-nephew, Roy Rogers – an unusual nugget of military history preserved, and made available to us, by a soldier’s family.
Bamford had hardly worn his new outfit when he was wounded near Ypres. He died a few days later of septicaemia and is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery near Boulogne. There are two memorials to him, indoors and out, at Peartree Church.
