Local Group Programmes

Other pubs had other associations: some with murder, some with romance, some with highwaymen, some with the (popular) adulteration of beer. Some members did not know of any family history with the pub trade until a certificate came to light with the information, leading to more research. It seemed that everyone heard a ‘pub’ story they didn’t know during this enjoyable afternoon meeting. Forthcoming Meetings:

How to find that interesting ancestor and to examine the life that they may have lived in dangerous and uncertain times. July and August – No Meetings

Organisers Fiona Ranger and Kay Lovell (February) Inaugural Meeting The newly created International Group held its first meeting, via Zoom, on the first Saturday morning of the month and welcomed members from Australia, Belgium, Canada and the USA. Co-organisers, Fiona and Kay, hosted the event and our HGS Chairman, Paul Pinhorne, led the proceedings. We were honoured by the presence of our President, Dr Nick Barratt, who was invited to say a few words before a full complement of the HGS Executive Committee took turns to introduce themselves and outline various aspects of the Society. Subjects ranged from services and resources offered by our Research Centre to a live tour of our website and an explanation as to how our Facebook page can be beneficial in extending research opportunities. The session ended with a Q&A session which led to some interesting and informative discussion. This meeting had been recorded so that it could be re-run the following Wednesday evening for the benefit of overseas members who had found the Saturday timing difficult for them to attend. Again, Australia, Canada and USA were well represented and a couple of New Zealanders joined us too. The feedback has been most complimentary. We are thrilled to be reaching out to members all over the world and look forward to this group going from strength to strength. A new group set up following the initial pandemic after international members were able to join us as monthly meetings went online. They can still join in with other groups whilst they are being held online.
