News from the Hampshire Archives

The Hampshire Archives and Local Studies /

Recent News We are pleased that, in line with the Government’s COVID-19 roadmap, Hampshire Record Office was able to reopen from 13 April 2021 for pre-booked appointments on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Document copying and research requests also resumed. Caroline Edwards, Head of Archives and Records and Hampshire’s fifth County Archivist, retired on 31st March following 31 years of service for the county. After working at Canterbury Cathedral Archives and Cornwall Record Office, Caroline arrived at Hampshire Record Office in early 1990 as an archivist. She went on to work for the Winchester Cathedral Archive overseeing the transfer of an initial tranche of the archive to the Record Office in 2009. Later as archivist to Hampshire Archives Trust, Caroline travelled the county advising on the care and cataloguing of archives in private hands, museums and other institutions, building links which in many cases resulted in the deposit of records in the appropriate repository – not least the repatriation in 2001 of the Wakefield Collection from the Library of Congress in Washington DC, including a fine series of medieval and early modern title deeds to the Tylney of Rotherwick estate. Caroline’s career has been notable for the enthusiasm which she has brought to her leadership of a wide range of projects, many of which were supported by the Hampshire Archive Trust, including the Hampshire Photographic Project and the community archive project Living Links, and she has developed and fostered key networks across

the county. During her time as County Archivist, the renowned Winchester pipe rolls were awarded a coveted place on the UNESCO UK Memory of the World Register in 2011, and the Service received Archive Service Accreditation in 2018. We wish Caroline well with her future endeavours. For the next 12 months the service will be led by Paula Crompton, Strategic Manager (Collections) for the Library Service.
